Uplight or Downlight: How a Floor Lamp's Light Distribution Changes the Room and the Spec You Write
The same 3000 lm from an AT03 floor lamp creates vastly different visual experiences depending on whether light is bounced off the ceiling or directed downward, directly impacting glare, ambience, and task performance in retail environments.
When evaluating floor lamps like the AT03 for EU and US retail spaces, lighting buyers must look beyond total lumen output to understand how light distribution shapes perception. The AT03 delivers 3000 lm from its 30 W LED board, but whether this flux acts as indirect uplight or task downlight changes everything. Indirect uplight relies on ceiling reflectance to diffuse light, creating soft, shadow-free ambience ideal for living areas but requiring lighter ceiling finishes to avoid efficiency loss.
In contrast, task downlight directs the same 3000 lm downward via a focused optic, providing higher illuminance on work surfaces but risking glare if not properly shielded at seated eye height—typically 1000–1200 mm from the floor. The AT03’s adjustable brightness (10%-100%) and colour temperature range (2700-6500 K) allow tuning for different zones, but the optical design determines where that light actually lands.
Ceiling reflectance is a silent spec killer: a dark ceiling absorbs uplight, wasting lumens and forcing higher drive currents to compensate, which shortens LED lifespan. For downlight configurations, the AT03’s diffuser geometry and remote-controlled dimming help manage glare, but buyers must verify uplight/downlight split in photometric reports before sampling.
Applied to RFQ writing, this means specifying not just '3000 lm' but '3000 lm with ≥70% uplight component for ambient mode' or '≤15% direct glare at 1100 mm height for task mode'. These parameters translate directly to in-store experience and compliance with EN 12464-1 and IESNA RP-1 standards for commercial spaces.
Before requesting samples, ask the supplier: What is the measured uplight/downlight ratio in the AT03’s photometric report? How is glare evaluated at seated eye height per UGR limits? What ceiling reflectance values were used in your ambient performance calculations?
